Artist's Statement

My work is personal, drawing from experiences and images of friends and neighbors and spaces from my immediate neighborhood in North Philadelphia. I am interested in the power of representation and what a portrait can (and cannot) communicate about a person to the world. I care about justice and equality, especially for making space for voices that are not heard and representing my community in a positive light when most reports are negative or violent. I am interested in making art available, of interest to, and a means for gaining power for marginalized people. I love investigating color and am particularly curious about the range of colors that can be discovered in flesh-tones in portraiture. I find a challenge in capturing a figure well, and believe that the figure is one of the most powerful ways to communicate because of the power in an encounter with another person.
